Connection Problems
Wireless Connection Problems
We frequently receive reports of people being unable to connect their computers to the TRU wireless network or they have connected but experience problems with their connection. Below are a number of points that you should check before reporting any problem.
No Connection
If you are experiencing no connectivity at all there may be some problems with the installation or configuration of your notebook wireless card or desktop wireless adapter. Make sure that the card is fully inserted into your PC card slot and that the drivers were installed according to the directions provided by your wireless card vendor.
Username or Password Refused
If you are student check that you can login to your account on a lab PC. If you are having problems logging into a lab PC contact the Computer LRC - OM1326 to assist you.
If you are staff or faculty you should use the same network username and password you use to login to your work PC. If you are continuing to have problems logging in contact Computer Lab Support at 250-828-5332 (Room OM1326) or the IT Service Desk at 250-852-6800.
Reception
If you are experiencing an intermittent or slow connection it may be the result of interference from other electronic devices. Some factors that affect the quality of your connection include:
Distance from your location to the access point
Number and type of walls and obstructions between you and the access point
Electronic devices in the area (such as cordless phones)
Number of users connected to the access point at the same time
Rogue Access Points
Wireless signals operate in the 2.4 GHz radio band so things like 2.4 GHz phones, microwaves or other devices emitting signals at that frequency may disrupt communication. If you are having difficulty getting a signal, try moving to a different location. Shut off any high frequency electronic devices that you are not using. We request that you do not attempt to install a new access point because rogue access points on the network will interfere with the rest of the wireless network.
Suspicious activity message
If your computer is not authenticated to the network but attempting to connect, it may create traffic that may be deemed as suspicious. In order to protect our network and the wireless service for others, your computer may temporarily be removed from service for 30 minutes. After this time, if you authenticate, your wireless access should be successful, provided you have scanned and removed any viruses and have stopped any peer-to-peer software (e.g BitTorrent).
Still doesn't work?
If your wireless card still doesn't work, contact the place where you bought the card, describe the problem you are having and any error messages and include details of what you have tried.
If you are still having trouble with the connection please contact Computer Lab Support at 250-828-5332 (Room OM1326) or the IT Service Desk at 250-852-6800. Wireless connections can be difficult sometimes, and locating a source of interference can be tough. We can provide information and help for improving the quality of connection you receive on your wireless connection.
